Program Description:

Program Overview

USFSP students and their local clients

In this program, students will travel to San Juan La Laguna de Atitlan in Guatemala to work with local indigenous women-owned cooperatives and businesses. Students will meet their clients shortly after arrival in San Juan and will work under supervision of their instructors and with their clients on developing business and marketing strategies that are adjusted to the business climate, the target market(s), and the skills sets of their clients.

This course explores fundamental business approaches and issues in the emerging markets of Latin America with special emphasis on the link between sustainable economic development and Women’s Entrepreneurship Development. Attention is given to the nature and dynamics of business and marketing as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by small business organizations and cooperatives in Latin America. Accordingly, the course will focus on issues such as cultural differences, the need for infrastructure and educational systems, low wages and poverty, environmental protection and sustainable development, resource depletion, social marketing, corporate social responsibility, entrepreneurship, creating business opportunities both locally and overseas, and microfinance.

At the end of the program, students will travel to Antigua (Guatemala) where the last day is spent sightseeing and shopping.

Program Charge: $1,950.00 (double occupancy)/ $2,190.00 (single occupancy)

Note: Space is limited for single occupancy accommodations and will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must email studyabroad@usfsp.edu to notify Education Abroad if they wish to select single occupancy.

Included:

  • On-site program direction by USFSP instructor
  • Course taught by USFSP instructor
  • Accommodations for the duration of the program
  • All program related in-country transportation, including airport pick up and drop off for students

  • Most meals (all meals are vegetarian for food safety)

 Not Included:
  • International airfare to and from Guatemala (estimated $700)
  • ***For safety reasons, all participants in the program are required to book on the group flight with program faculty leader Dr. Braunsberger. USFSP Education Abroad will send participants booking instructions closer to departure. Participants are not allowed to book independently on a different flight or the same flight as the group.***  
  • Personal spending (3 meals; entertainment to vary by individual)
  • Tuition for the course (3 credits) - to be paid to the Cashier's Office after USFSP Education Abroad registers the student for the program course

  • Trip cancellation/interruption insurance (highly recommended due to conditions in Guatemala).
    • USFSP Education Abroad recommends that all students consider trip cancellation insurance to cover items such as program fees, airline tickets, and travel-related costs in the unlikely event of a withdrawal from a program or if USFSP must cancel a program due to a natural or man-made disaster, U.S. State Department Warnings or Alerts, forces of nature, pandemics, acts or omissions by foreign governments, etc. (only those funds that can be recovered will be refunded). Many travel insurance companies exist and each one has their own terms and exclusions. A few offer “cancel for any reason” supplements and might be of particular interest. (Be aware that this type of coverage often requires that you purchase the coverage within 15 days of the initial deposit.)

How and When to Pay

Payment Schedule:

1) Due after committing to program: $500 Confirmation Payment
    Note: Confirmation Payment is non-refundable. We will let you know when your Confirmation Payment has been posted to OASIS.

2)  Due November 18th: $1,450.00 (double occupancy)/ $1,690.00 (single occupancy)
     Note: Nov. 18th payment is the full program cost--$1,950.00 (double occupancy)/ $2,190.00 (single occupancy)--minus the Confirmation Payment.

Once we have the minimum number of group participants committed, we will place the confirmation charge on your OASIS account.  For most travel cancellation insurance policies, you have 15 days from your initial payment to purchase insurance.  We will advise you when to make payment to ensure you do not purchase insurance for a program that is cancelled due to low enrollment.         

Once you have been accepted to your program of choice, you will be asked to confirm your participation in the program by hitting the Commit button on your personal application page. Having confirmed your participation, the USFSP Education Abroad Office will place charges on your OASIS account. Students will be asked to make a confirmation payment toward the Study Abroad Program Cost (SACD). Generally, this payment is $500, although certain programs may have alternate payment requirements as indicated on the specific program website.

Once you have committed to the program, you are financially liable for the Study Abroad Program Cost. Please carefully read your program-specific payment requirements as well as the Financial Terms and Conditions for your relevant program.

To make the payment:

ON-LINE (Do not use the on-line payment option if you have other outstanding charges on your account, as any payment will automatically be credited toward your on-campus charges)
Step 1: Go to USF Single-SignOn
Step 2: Log in using your USF Net ID.
Step 3: Click on OASIS on the top menu.
Step 4: On the Main Menu, go to "Student"
Step 5: On the Student Menu, go to "Tuition & Fees"
Step 6: Click on "Student Bill Payment" PLEASE NOTE: The USF Cashier's Office charges a 2.5% "convenience fee" for using a credit or bank card. If you use an online check you will not be charged the additional fee.  They no longer accept VISA.

IN PERSON

Post-Commitment Cancellation Policy:

89-61 days prior to departure student is fee liable for non-recoverable costs.*
60 days or less prior to departure student is liable for up to 100% of the program fee if they cancel.

Students must email studyabroad@usfsp.edu to notify USFSP Education Abroad of their cancellation.

*Education Abroad will assess on a case-by-case basis the non-recoverable costs of the program for which the student is liable. Non-recoverable costs may exceed to-date funds collected by USFSP Education Abroad at time of student's withdraw from the program.

Getting There

Group air is arranged through a travel agency. Students are responsible for making payment to travel agency directly for air transportation by the deadline.  All participants must travel on the selected group flight (no exceptions).

Medical Insurance and Travel Documentation


Passport


USF provides program participants with sickness/accident and emergency medical evacuation insurance valid for the dates of the program. Please note that the USF insurance does not include trip cancellation coverage or travel insurance (theft of luggage, costs due to delays in travel time, etc.), pre-existing conditions or on-going medical treatment.

U.S. citizens must have a valid U.S. passport with at least one year of validity remaining on the passport. Non-U.S. passport holders should check with the Guatemalan consulate in Miami regarding entry/visa requirements.

Safety & Health


Health

Participant's safety and well-being are paramount to USF. Please click here for detailed safety and health information given in our Pre-Departure Guide before you travel. Also, don't forget to read up on country-specific information on the U.S. Department of State and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention websites.

Zika Virus in Guatemala: All participants should be aware of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention travel warning regarding Zika virus and its prevention in Guatemala--http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/alert/zika-virus-guatemala.

Scams Common in Guatemala:  Parking Lot Scam Victims are approached in a hotel, restaurant or other public place by an individual claiming that there is some sort of problem with his or the would-be victim’s automobile in the parking lot. On the way to investigate the “problem,” usually in a remote or concealed area near the parking lot, the robber pulls a gun on the victim and demands cash, credit cards and other valuables.

Personal Safety in Guatemala:
The threat of violent crime in Guatemala is rated by the U.S. Department of State as “critical”. The Embassy has no reason to believe that U.S. citizens are being specifically targeted, although criminals in Guatemala may assume that U.S. citizens and their relatives have more money than average Guatemalans. Longer-term residents and dual nationals are more likely to become victims of serious crimes, as they tend to be integrated into local society and may not reside in safer areas. Tourists seem to be largely shielded from the worst incidents of violent crime, and instead succumb principally to pickpockets and purse-snatchers. However, U.S. tourists have also been victims of rapes, physical assaults, armed robberies and murders.

The number of violent crimes reported by U.S. citizens and other foreigners has remained high and such crimes have occurred even in areas of Guatemala City once considered safe, such as Zones 10, 14, and 15. Additionally, the Peace Corps has made areas of the country with particularly high incidents of crime “off-limits” to Peace Corps volunteers. Due to large scale drug and alien smuggling, the Guatemalan border with Mexico (and in particular the northwestern corner of Petén) is a high-risk area. The border areas including the Sierra de Lacandon and Laguna del Tigre National Parks are among the most dangerous areas in Guatemala. The U.S. Embassy takes extra precautions when U.S. government personnel travel to the region.

US. Embassy personnel observe heightened security precautions in Guatemala City and throughout the country:

Rather than traveling alone, use a reputable tour organization. 
Stay in groups, travel in a caravan consisting of two or more vehicles, and stay on the main roads.
Ensure that someone not traveling with you is aware of your itinerary. 
Avoid hotels that do not have adequate security. 
Intercity travel after dark anywhere in Guatemala is extremely dangerous and should be avoided altogether. 
It is preferable to stay in the main tourist destinations.
