This spring only semester exchange program allows USFSP students the opportunity to earn transfer college credit while studying Chinese language at Huaihua University in Huaihua, China. Students are enrolled abroad and take classes, live, and socialize with local Chinese students at Huaihua University and other international students, gaining maximum exposure to the language and Chinese culture for one semester. Scholarships may be available for students who study at Huaihua for one year.
Exchange programs are competitive and students are encouraged to begin the application process early.

Huaihua University traces its roots back to 1958 and is located in Huaihua, a city in southwestern Hunan Province, China. The university is comprised of two campuses, East and West, and is a comprehensive institution of higher education in the country with over 16,000 enrolled students. The university has a small, but growing, international student population from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, Japan, the Ukraine, and more. This allows for greater one-on-one Chinese language learning opportunities as international students are assigned individual domestic language partners.
Who Can Participate
This program is open to students of all majors at USFSP. No prior language experience in Chinese is required. Students from USF or USFSM are not eligible to apply.
All students will enroll in intensive Chinese language courses at Huaihua University for transfer credit. These courses are equivalent to CHI 1120 Modern Chinese I and CHI 1121 Modern Chinese II in USFSP Course Catalog for a total of 8 transfer credits. Students must be enrolled full-time while abroad, so will also be required to enroll in at least 4 credits of USFSP online courses. Tuition for the USFSP online courses is not included in the program cost.

In order to receive full credit for the program courses, students must complete an online pre-departure orientation in Canvas and attend courses at the language institute. A link to access the orientation will be sent to students' USF email addresses prior to departure.
Students will pay all tuition directly to USFSP via OASIS. Tuition for courses taken at Huaihua University is based on the in state per credit hour charge. Tuition for the direct USFSP credit online courses (see Course Information above) is based on student's current per credit hour charge whether in state or out of state.

Passport or visa expenses--non-US passport holders are responsible for checking the entry requirements of China for their country of citizenship and procuring/purchasing any required visas.
Shot/vaccinations--any shots/vaccinations required by the student in order to obtain a Chinese visa are the responsibility of students
How to Pay
Payment Schedule: Students pay all tuition directly to USFSP. Tuition due according to normal schedule.
Once you have been accepted to your program of choice, you will be asked to confirm your participation in the program by hitting the Commit button on your personal application page. Having confirmed your participation, the USFSP Education Abroad Office will place charges on your OASIS account. Students will be asked to make a confirmation payment toward the Study Abroad Program Cost (SAPC). Generally, this payment is $500, although certain programs may have alternate payment requirements as indicated on the specific program website.
Once you have committed to the program, you are financially liable for the Study Abroad Program Cost. Please carefully read your program-specific payment requirements as well as the Financial Terms and Conditions for your relevant program.
To make the payment:
ON-LINE (Please note: Do not use the on-line payment option if you have other outstanding charges on your account, as any payment will automatically be credited toward your on-campus charges)
Step 1: Go to USF Single-SignOn
Step 2: Log in using your USF Net ID.
Step 3: Click on OASIS on the top menu.
Step 4: On the Main Menu, go to "Student"
Step 5: On the Student Menu, go to "Tuition & Fees"
Step 6: Click on "Student Bill Payment" PLEASE NOTE: The USF Cashier's Office charges a 2.5% "convenience fee" for using a credit or bank card. If you use an online check you will not be charged the additional fee. They no longer accept VISA.
Step 1: Email the USFSP Education Abroad Office at firstname.lastname@example.org for a payment form. The form must be completed and signed by an authorized member of the Education Abroad Office.
Step 2: Take payment form to the USFSP Cashier's Office (BAY 132). You may pay only pay with check, cash or money order in person. Checks are payable to USF.
Step 3: Please keep a record of your payment for your records.
Post-Commitment Cancellation Policy:
You are liable for $100 less any non-recoverable program costs if you cancel at least 91 days prior to departure.*
You are liable for $300 less any non-recoverable program costs if you cancel 61 to 90 days prior to departure.*
You are liable for up to 100% of the program fee if you cancel 60 days or less prior to departure.*
Students must email email@example.com to notify USFSP Education Abroad of their cancellation.
*Education Abroad will assess on a case-by-case basis the non-recoverable costs of the program for which the student is liable. Non-recoverable costs may exceed to-date funds collected by USFSP Education Abroad at time of student's withdraw from the program.

Note: The Education Abroad Scholarship application deadline for fall semester is June 1, 2018. However, applicants must be committed to the program as well as have paid the Confirmation Payment in order to be considered for scholarships. This takes processing time. Therefore, we strongly advise applicants submit all parts of the scholarship application by April 15, 2018 Huaihua University program application deadline.
Health and Safety
USF provides program participants with sickness/accident and emergency medical evacuation insurance valid for the dates of the program. Those who will travel independently, either in advance of the program or after the program ends, must ensure that they have insurance coverage valid outside the U.S.
All participants must be in possession of a valid U.S. Passport or a valid passport from their country of residence. Passports must have an expiration date at least 6 months after the student's scheduled return to the U.S. Non-U.S. citizens should check the Chinese embassy here for the visa requirements for China. International students must also submit the Study or Research Abroad Approval eform, listed under "Other Services", in their istart account.

Students should not book any flights or transportation until notified by Education Abroad. Students are responsible for booking their own flights.
Huaihua South Station offers high-speed rails to different cities of China. The nearest international airport is Changsha Huanghua Airport (CSX) in Changsha City, China. Huaihua South Station is about 1.5 hours by high-speed rail from Changsha South Station.
Students will board at Huaihua University's East Campus with other international students of the same gender for the duration of the program. Accommodations are triple occupancy air-conditioned flats with en-suite bathroom and shower, single bed, wardrobe, desk, chair, sink and kitchen. Wifi is included in the room.
