Deadlines to apply for Education Abroad Scholarships are listed by application cycle in the table below. Please apply for the scholarship cycle that corresponds to the semester of your education abroad program. To submit your scholarship application and materials please visit the Financial Aid website. You will be prompted to login with your USF NetID and password.

While none of these scholarships are intended to pay for an entire program, they are meant to aid our students in covering some of the costs associated with international study.
In order to be considered for a scholarship, students must have:
1) Completed the Education Abroad scholarship application(s) in AwardSpring,
2) Committed to their program of choice,
3) Paid their required program deposit

How to Apply
- AwardSpring is now open for student access. To submit your Education Abroad scholarship application please visit the Financial Aid website to login to AwardSpring using your USF NetID and password.

- Submit once all the questions are completed.
- Complete the Education Abroad scholarship applications* listed under “Items Requiring Completion” by selecting “Complete Follow-Up” (the scholarships listed here are generated via the answers you provided in the application dashboard.

NOTE: you may be eligible for other scholarships through AwardSpring but only the above mentioned scholarships are administered through the Education Abroad Office.
- Submit your Education Abroad scholarship application(s) in AwardSpring by the scholarship deadline. You may monitor the status of your scholarship applications in your account under the “Applied Scholarships” section.
- Commit to a program and,

Education Abroad Administered Scholarships
Genshaft/Greenbaum Passport Scholarship Endowed Fund
Passport Scholarships were created by a $1 million endowment from USF President Judy Genshaft and her husband, Steven Greenbaum. Students receiving this scholarship will be known as Genshaft/Greenbaum Passport Scholars. Scholarship amounts will be $5,000 to $2,500 per person.
Scholarship Criteria:
- Full or part-time student
- Any academic level
- Any USF campus
- Any major
- US citizen
- First-time study abroad
Merit and financial need may be taken into consideration.

Ellsworth G. Simmons Scholarship for International Leadership
Recipients will be full-time USF degree-seeking students. Applicants must have an interest in international business and demonstrate leadership and community service involvement. Scholarships are awarded for Fall and Spring semesters and summer term. A maximum of $6,000 may be awarded annually.
Scholarship Criteria:
- For USF continuing undergraduate, graduate, transfer students
- Available to all majors
- US Citizen or International Student eligible
- Minimum 3.4 GPA for currently enrolled USF students; 3.5 minimum GPA for new transfer students
- Financial need considered but not the sole determining factor in choosing recipients
- USF Tampa campus only
- Applicants should be residents of Florida; preference to Hillsborough County residents
Joan Newcomb Study Abroad Scholarships
Special Requirements: For USF International Studies majors/minors only. Scholarships are awarded fall & spring semesters and summer term. Applicants are not guaranteed funding. Award amounts are determined by the quality of the application and available funds, but are generally in the amounts of $500-$750. Applicants must have been accepted into their program of study and paid the required deposit to assure program participation. Study abroad duration must be three weeks or longer. Additional consideration given to students who balance academics, community service and employment.
Scholarship Criteria:
- For continuing undergraduate, graduate, transfer students
- Major-International Studies only
- US Citizen or International Student eligible
- Minimum GPA is 2.5
- Financial need considered but not a deciding factor
- USF Tampa campus only
Mark and Kay Orr International Affairs Study Abroad Scholarship
Special Requirements: For semester or academic year study abroad only. Award amounts are $1000 minimum. Recipients will have completed one semester at USF at the time of application. Preference given to study in non-traditional locations Scholarship applicants must have applied to their program of study.
Scholarship Criteria:
- For continuing undergraduate, graduate, transfer students
- Available to all majors
- US Citizen or International Student eligible
- Minimum GPA is 2.5
- Financial need considered but not a deciding factor
USF Federal Credit Union Passport Scholarship Endowed Fund
USF Federal Credit Union Passport Scholarships aim to help USF students be exposed to the world by providing access to a diverse array of research and education abroad opportunities, including but not limited to semester exchanges, dual degree programs, summer and short term programs, international internships, and service learning opportunities.
Scholarship Criteria:
- For continuing undergraduate, graduate, or transfer students
- Available to all majors
- Restricted based on a combination of merit and financial need. USF has established GPA requirements for merit-based aid. USF uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine financial need.
USF Education Abroad Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund is for subsidizing an education abroad experience for a student traveling internationally on a USF sponsored study abroad trip. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need as documented by the Free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

- How do I apply for Study Abroad Scholarships?
Login to AwardSpring with your USF NetID and password to apply for Education Abroad scholarships.
When you first login, there will be “one item requiring completion.” Click this item, and complete the questionnaire. Once you submit the questionnaire, AwardSpring will generate a list of all the university scholarships you are eligible for on your dashboard. To start an Education Abroad scholarship application, click on any of the six Education Abroad scholarships listed below. Upload all required appropriate documents and spend ample time on your essays. Individual essays for each scholarship are NOT required, you may copy and paste the same essays into each of our scholarship applications.

- If I just want to apply to a need-based scholarship, do I have to fill out the Statement of Purpose?
Yes, you must fill out the entire application to be eligible for any of the Education Abroad Administered Scholarships.
- Do I have to apply for each Education Abroad Administered Scholarship?
Yes. Once you complete the opening questionnaire in AwardSpring, you will be able to view all scholarships for which you are eligible on the dashboard, including the individual Education Abroad scholarships. You must need to submit individual applications for each Education Abroad scholarship you wish to be considered for, but all Education Abroad scholarships have the same required documents for submission which can be shared across multiple scholarship applications.
- Do I need a transcript for these applications?
No. You will fill out some academic information in the initial questionnaire, but you do not need to provide a transcript.
- What is the required deposit payment?
All students must pay their program deposit to remain eligible for Education Abroad scholarships. Please refer to the Program Charge Notification email sent to your USF email address for the specific deposit amount required. If you have questions about your deposit amount please contact EA-Business@usf.edu.
- When is my payment due and how do I pay?
Payment is due by the scholarship deadline or within 5 days of charges being posted to the student's account, whichever is later. Students are responsible for checking their OASIS account for the term they are going abroad to see when charges have been posted. Please note, that program charges are posted manually to student accounts between 1 and 3 business days after committing to their program. For directions on how to pay, please see our How to Pay.
- Are USF students eligible for Education Abroad Scholarships if they are going on non-USF programs?
Yes, however, the student must fill out the appropriate program application (Affiliate, Non-Affiliate or Independent Traveler application), as well as the Cost Estimate Form which must be signed by the Education Abroad advisor, along with any Education Abroad Scholarship applications.
- Who can sign off on my Cost Estimate Worksheet?
Only your USF Education Abroad Office advisor can sign this form. Please refer to contact information listed on your program’s website if you are unsure who your assigned advisor is.
- Are non-USF students eligible for Education Abroad Administered Scholarships?
No. Students must be degree-seeking at USF to be eligible for Education Abroad scholarships. However, if you are a member of the FUSE Program, you are eligible to apply if you will be enrolled in USF courses when you travel.
- How do I know when my Education Abroad Scholarship application is complete?
You must upload all the required materials and answer all required questions. Then you will be able to “submit” your scholarship applications. You can view the scholarships that you applied for under the “Applied Scholarships” tab on your dashboard. This tab will show your application’s status, and ultimately your award decision.
- Will I be notified when a decision has been made about whether or not I am awarded an Education Abroad Administered Scholarship?
Award decisions will be published in AwardSpring approximately 4 weeks after the scholarship deadline. To view your award decision(s) login to AwardSpring and go to the “Applied Scholarships” tab on your dashboard. You will also receive and email from Education Abroad if you are awarded a scholarship.
