|Exploring New Zealand; Adventure Capital of the World 2017||
Many USF students want to travel and experience different cultures but do not have the confidence, experience, or knowledge to travel internationally. This trip is an opportunity to experience Polynesian culture in the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown. Given the ample learning opportunities it provides, the first three days will be spent in the city. On the second night the students will travel to the Queenstown Skyline where they can experience a traditional Kiwi Hakka performed by the indigenous Maori. They also will have plenty of opportunities while in Queenstown to visit Polynesian restaurants and indulge in classic Hangi cooking. As an island nation, New Zealand has had less European influence and has maintained a more traditional culture compared to mainland Australia. Students will also get to thoughtfully reflect without the distraction of internet and cellphone service while backpacking across wilderness in New Zealand. There they will gain an understanding of nature’s therapeutic properties thru the challenge of multi-day backpacking. As they hike the multi-day trek, the students will also be taught to practice self-awareness by recording their struggles and strong points through a daily journal and a process called autoethnobiographic journaling.
