Program Description:
Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Switzerland

May 6 - 14, 2018

Program Description

Lugano Switzerland
This trip is an exploration of how cultural and linguistic diversity affects every aspect of social, professional, and economic life. Switzerland is a microcosm of Europe. Within this one small country are areas that speak French, German, and Italian. This linguistic and cultural diversity provides the opportunity to examine how one’s language effects daily activities and interactions.

Students will fly into Zurich but will immediately take the high speed scenic train to French-speaking Geneva. Students will spend two days in Geneva. During that time, they will complete a series of activities in a cultural inventory checkless (a sort-of cultural scavenger hunt) which will offer students opportunities to observe French-speak Swiss people in daily economic, educational, and personal activities. Students will also have the opportunity to meet and observe interpreters at the United Nations Headquarters there in Geneva.

Students will then take the train to rural and scenic German-speaking Interlaken. Here students will again complete a cultural observation inventory which will allow them to observe and reflect on the differences not only between French-speaking and German-speaking areas, but also on the contrasts between rural and urban areas of the country. Students will also have the opportunity to hike and to observe the natural beauty of this scenic mountainous area.

Finally, students will spend 2 days in Italian-speaking Lugano. In this mixture of urban and rural environments, students will complete their final cultural inventory. Students will also have the opportunity to observe a fourth language as they visit the city’s Swiss-sign-language-using association of the Deaf.

Students will return to Zurich for a final night and an early flight back to the US.
