Program Description:
USF in Israel

July 2 - 30, 2018

Program Description

USF in IsraelThis program will focus on (a) general psychosocial concerns related to children’s health (e.g., health promotion and prevention, adherence to medical regimens, hospitalization experiences), and (b) illness, that is, medical disorders commonly addressed by child behavioral health/pediatric psychologists (e.g., diabetes, cancer, obesity and pain). This course is designed to provide students with a broad overview of the field of Child behavioral Health/Pediatric Psychology. The development of these fields as specialty areas within psychology and behavioral health care as well as the scope of practice within the health care system will be discussed.
The course will also provide students with an introduction to the major behavioral and psychological disorders of childhood and adolescence, emphasizing methods of assessing and treating these disorders that are supported by research.  We will also discuss how child behavioral health/pediatric psychologists work within health care systems in the US. We also will have at least one session on trauma that will be augmented with a visit to Yad va shem (major Holocaust museum in Jerusalem). Most importantly, we will take advantage of this course being taught in a different country, with a health care system that functions with a different set of standards and values. The instructor has established connections at each of the major medical centers in Israel, having conducted clinical research at each of these sites.  She will use her connections to set up visits at several major hospital centers in Israel, in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem. These visits will also correspond with cultural activities for the students and opportunities to tour the country. She will also arrange to have us hear from child behavioral health/pediatric psychologists working at each of these centers to obtain first hand knowledge of how children and their families are treated in these centers.
USF in IsraelThis course is intended to be an upper level, special topics seminar for undergraduate students. However, graduate students are welcome to enroll in the class and will be provided with additional readings and a paper assignment to earn graduate credit.

During the program, students will also enjoy daytrips to Jerusalem's Old City, daytrips to Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Yad ve'shem to visit the Holocaust Memorial, and daytrips to Masada and The Dead Sea.
