Program Overview

Between its rich history, vibrant city life, and world class entertainment, London remains one of the primary destinations for students from across the globe. Join USF students and faculty this summer for a four week experience in the heart of London all while earning USF direct credit towards your degree program. Students will reside in single, en-suite accommodations at the University College London’s John Dodgson House located near King’s Cross just  a short walk away from the British Museum.

Location

London is one of the world's biggest and most vibrant cities. The multicultural population offers cuisine of all flavors, as well as many other exciting foreign influences. Turn the corner, and you'll be amazed at the old historic architecture of many castles, cathedrals, and statues that are scattered throughout the city. Students are housed in the heart of London. The Kings Cross neighborhood is only steps away from the British Library (home to the Magna Carta!) and Kings Cross train station (yes, platform 9 3/4 is there). A short ride on the Tube (subway system) and you can find yourself at the British Museum, Buckingham Palace, Camden Town, the West End theater district, the trendy Southwark area, and much more.

Host Institution

We will rent classrooms at University of London, Birkbeck College and have reserved rooms at John Dodgson House, a wonderful, secure residence hall about a 10 minute walk from the classrooms. All rooms are single, ensuite and there are full kitchens for each 5-10 bedrooms and full laundry facilities.

Academic Program and Course Information

Faculty members should be willing to teach two related classes that would each attract 25 students. Classes could appeal to all types of majors. For example, the superb London museums could be utilize

d to teach science classes, as well as those in the Arts. Laboratories can be taken in the fall, when students return to their main campuses. We also anticipate offering some classes for non-majors, and possibly graduate students if there are suffici

ent numbers. We will also be targeting non-USF students and international students so classes should also be appealing and potentially transferable (for credit).

Living Arrangements

Faculty would be expected to stay in the residence with the students, helping with problems that may arise.

Items to Consider

  1. We ask that faculty deliver two different, but related, classes to 25 students each, over a four week period. Each class will run Monday through Thursday. Fridays will be available for day long field trips if needed. Each instructor will teach six credit hours and each student would take six credit hours.
  2. The University of South Florida would provide airfares to and from London and accommodations in John Dodgson House (or a nearby residence).
  3. We anticipate faculty would take students on some half day field trips in London during the week and/or full day field trips on Fridays, or possibly on a weekend. Local transportation is made easy by the use of “oyster” cards, cards with a magnetic strip which students and faculty can use on the extensive underground system. Oyster cards would be provided.
  4. If selected, we expect faculty to help recruit students into their classes by means of classroom visits, e-mails and web postings.
  5. We need to market this program early in the fall semester. Therefore, we would like faculty suggestions for classes, and completed applications, submitted to http://educationabroad.global.usf.edu/?go=facproplondon no later than the close of business on January 31st. Notifications will be made by the end of February.
